MPR: One year later, Rep. Dean Phillips recalls shock, violence of Capitol attack

On Jan. 6, 2021, an angry mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, urged on by then-President Donald Trump. Trump told them the 2020 election was stolen from him and they should “fight like hell, [or] you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Five people died in the insurrection, more than 140 police officers were injured, and for the first time in American history, we did not have a peaceful transfer of power.

Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips was in the U.S. Capitol that day. On year later, he shared his memories with host Cathy Wurzer.

Phillips said he still feels “disbelief that what transpired one year ago today happened in the United States of America.”
