Rep. Phillips Calls on Pres. Trump to Make Good on Promise of Government Reform in Second SOTU Address

H.R.1 provides the President with a golden opportunity to "drain the swamp" and clean up Washington

Bloomington, MN - Representative Dean Phillips (MN-03) today issued the following statement calling on President Trump to make good on a central promise of his 2016 campaign to "drain the swamp" by elevating the issue of government reform and embracing H.R.1, the "For the People Act", in his second State of the Union Address:

"President Trump deserves credit for calling to attention the corrupting influence of money in politics throughout the course of his 2016 campaign," said Phillips. "Unfortunately, since being elected President, the swamp has only gotten deeper. That is why I am calling on President Trump to reiterate his support for reforms to our campaign finance system and ethics laws, and to use his bully pulpit to rally support in the Senate for H.R.1, the 'For the People Act', of which I am a proud co-sponsor. With its passage, the state of the union would be much stronger -- and I stand ready to work with the President to get it signed into law."

While public opinion polls have consistently shown widespread support for campaign finance reform, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has promised to be a roadblock to its passage in the Senate.
