Bipartisanship
Representative Dean Phillips (MN-03) released the following statement following President Trump's second State of the Union Address: "I appreciate President Trump opening his speech with a call for bipartisanship and collaboration in Washington, D.C. And I agree with his calls to action on reducing the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs, fighting childhood cancer, passing paid family leave, and investing in this country's crumbling infrastructure. Those are areas that can and should inspire such bipartisan cooperation. I was disappointed, however, that the President did not mention an issue he raised frequently on the campaign trail: the corrupting influence of money in politics. There is perhaps no better example of the need for that than the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs, and meaningful change will be all but impossible without significant campaign finance and ethics reforms like those in H.R.1 and other proposals pending in Congress. In the next two years, I hope that the President will focus on issues like these which unite Americans rather than continue with the divisive rhetoric that only divides us." ### |
