WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Rep. Dean Phillips (D, MN) will vote against Republicans’ long-shot bid to remove Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The quixotic campaign has baffled many, since it is Congress - not Cabinet secretaries – that is at fault for the shameful state of our immigration system.  

“This Republican Majority will go down in history as a complete nonentity,” said Phillips. “The Articles of Impeachment presented today are nothing more than a haphazard attempt to distract the American people from their failure to mount a serious legislative session. I will be voting against this political sideshow and invite my colleagues to place principle over politics and join me in pursuing meaningful immigration reform that will keep our communities safe and economy strong.” 

Earlier this week, Phillips commended the Border Patrol Union-endorsed immigration deal proposed by a bipartisan group in the Senate and called on Speaker Johnson to display courage, negotiate in good faith, and begin actually addressing the human, security, and constitutional crisis at our southern border. 

Taking a page from the Trump playbook, some in the House Republican Conference seem more interested in fighting for their 15 minutes of fame than fighting for a secure border, and Speaker Johnson has effectively dropped out of negotiations.
