On Friday Sept. 8th, the Rotary Club of Orono, in partnership with US Congressman Dean Phillips, organized and sponsored a recognition ceremony for Vietnam-era veterans and their families. It was a beautiful morning, with scores of American flags flying as a backdrop in Maple Plain’s Veterans Memorial Park. Phillips individually acknowledged and honored 15 veterans with a commemorative pin, recognizing their sacrifice and service to the country. After each veteran was honored they were invited to come forward and share about their experiences if they wanted to. It was a moving ceremony and celebration. Guests sat around the memorial. Four mayors -Charlie Miner, Long Lake; Jennifer Labadie, Shorewood; Marvin Johnson; Independence, and Julie Maas-Kusske, Maple Plain - three police chiefs, one fire chief, three council members, Representative Kristin Robbins, and one school board member in addition to neighbors, friends and family members were all on hand to show their appreciation and honor to the veterans. Following the “pinning” ceremony, the Rotary Club sponsored a luncheon at McGarry’s Pub where club members and honored guests were able to enjoy a delicious meal and spend time together sharing stories and getting to know one another.
