Wearing a mask in public can reduce the spread of coronavirus, protect our families, and keep businesses open. It’s OK to have questions – even concerns – and I want to make sure you have all of the information about Minnesota’s mask mandate…

Coronavirus spreads by respiratory droplets that are released when people talk, cough, or sneeze. Many people with coronavirus do not show symptoms but can still spread it to others, and people with the virus can be contagious before they start showing symptoms. Wearing a face covering helps to protect the people around you if you are infected and do not know it. Research has shown that the use of face coverings can greatly reduce the risk of infection, especially when combined with other prevention efforts such as social distancing and hand hygiene – and slowing the spread will help keep our community, and our businesses, open and thriving.

A face covering can include a paper or disposable mask, cloth mask, neck gaiter, scarf, bandanna, or a religious face covering. A face covering must cover the mouth and nose completely. Masks that incorporate a valve, mesh masks, or masks with openings, holes, visible gaps in the design or material, or vents will not be compliant with the mask mandate. You can find more information about how to make a mask, details regarding the mandate, and answers to frequently asked questions here.
