Youth Advisory Council

Congressman Dean Phillips’s Youth Advisory Council is an annual opportunity for high school students to engage with their peers and learn how policy can transform our nation. As a member of the Council, students will learn more about Minnesota’s Third District, Congress, and the world at large. Each year the Council investigates a different topic, working in small groups, and presents their findings to the Congressman at the end of the summer term. Participating students will also be afforded meaningful professional development opportunities, including seminars on resume writing, cover letters, and informational interview skills.

Interested students are asked to submit applications to participate in the Advisory Council. More details about this year’s topic and the schedule can be found here.

Students will be put into groups based on policy interests and should expect to participate in at least three full group meetings along with small group meetings scheduled intermittently throughout the summer to discuss their research assignment with their teammates. While the group will have the opportunity to meet with the Congressman, students should expect to meet with Congressional staff and other students as part of this program.

The Council will convene in June and conclude its work in August. It is open to all those living in or attending school in the Third Congressional District who will be in grades 9 through 12 as of September of 2021. Participating students are expected to attend all scheduled meetings unless illness or other emergencies prevent attendance. While most of the meetings will be held virtually, the Youth Advisory Council may meet in an in-person setting if opportunity allows, so please let us know if you have any restrictions that would disallow you from participating.

To apply for a position on the Youth Advisory Council, please submit a completed application form and a one-page cover letter explaining why you would like to join the Council to Grant Anderla at grant.anderla@mail.house.gov. Please submit your application by Sunday, May 30, 2021.
